Advanced tools for safety assessment

In a new article in Nature Nanotechnology, MEN-researcher Bengt Fadeel (toghether with other researchers) writes about advanced tools for the safety assessment of nanomaterials. It is challenging to identify what features are driving toxicity, since there are a myriad of variations in the properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). At the same time it is a priority to reduce animal tests by introducing alternatives. Remarkable progress has been made in recent years with respect to mechanism-based hazard assessment of ENMs, including systems biology approaches as well as high-throughput screening platforms. New tools are also emerging in risk assessment and risk management for humans and the environment across the whole life-cycle of nano-enabled products. In this article, the researchers highlight some of the key advances in the hazard and risk assessment of ENMs.
