MISTRA Environmental Nanosafety presents the annual report for 2015-2016

Written by Ida Brattström Published in

It is with great pleasure that we present the Annual Report for 2015-2016. The research program is designed around specific Case studies, chosen due to their relevance to Swedish industry. In this yearly report, we highlight Case Study 1: Emission of nanoparticles from automobile application to road runoff water. This report also provides an overview of the MISTRA Environmental Nanosafety program and highlights activities and results obtained during 2015 and 2016.

So far, we have successfully developed models that predict environmental concentrations of nanoparticles in road runoff and found that there is a low risk of dispersion of tungsten carbide nanoparticles in aquatic systems due to agglomeration and sedimentation. These particles do not have acute negative effects on the aquatic wild life tested. On the other hand, industrially produced silica nanoparticles do not agglomeration, even after interactions with biomolecules of natural organic matter, but are rather diluted in aquatic systems. Toxicological studies are currently underway.
