"Studded tires take more lives than they save"

 – The very function of tire studs, which is to save lives, can be questioned, says Anna Furberg, PhD Student, Mistra Environmental Nanosafety, at Chalmers University of Technology.

Together with Professor Sverker Molander and Associate Professor Rickard Arvidsson, she has conducted a study of the whole life cycle of tire studs.

The results show that the negative impacts on human health is larger than the positive, and that a large part of the negative effects occur outside Scandinavia.

Advanced tools for safety assessment

In a new article in Nature Nanotechnology, MEN-researcher Bengt Fadeel (toghether with other researchers) writes about advanced tools for the safety assessment of nanomaterials. It is challenging to identify what features are driving toxicity, since there are a myriad of variations in the properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). At the same time it is a priority to reduce animal tests by introducing alternatives.

The public view on nanotechnology - new publication

The public view on risks and advantages with new technology can be crucial to promote new innovations and to introduce new products on the market. A recently published book chapter (in the anthology "Sprickor i fasaden" from the SOM-institute) by MEN-researchers Simon Larsson and Åsa Boholm deals with the Swedish public's view on risks and benefits with nanotechnology. The public has low knowledge about nanotechnology.
